David Disher, winner of the prestigious Sulman prize in 2007, is back with a new collection of works at United Galleries from next Thursday for his only Sydney show this year.

Disher’s highly intricate and detailed paintings blend surrealism and realism to create an unreal kind of hyper-realism, a style that has become readily recognisable as his signature. However, Disher is perhaps even more readily associated with the bitingly ironic social commentary which is a consistent undercurrent in the dream-like atmosphere of his work.

“Painting is a very difficult thing. It absorbs the whole man, body and soul…” says Disher. “Painting is all absorbing and occupies my mind at all times. That vague look on my face is actually me
formulating a work and constructing the invisible. When reality and the visible is Google, talkback, war on terror and sub-prime, then I find that the invisible and the surreal have more substance and relevance.”

Disher’s solo show opens from 6pm, Thursday 20 August at United Galleries, 179 – 181 Palmer Street, Darlinghurst.
