This week, an updated re-imagining of Nikolai Leskov’s novella hits the stage at Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre:

In the dead of a bitterly cold night a wealthy merchant is urgently called to work, leaving his restless young wife unattended. Bored and lonely, Katerina seeks out the farmhand to entertain her and the night escalates into a wild frenzy of lust, obsession, murder and betrayal.

Joseph Couch directs the world premiere of this innovative retelling of Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella. Set against the backdrop of an opulent yet oppressive Russia, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is a radical revision of Macbeth with the femme fatale at the centre. Crackling with intrigue, this is thrilling contemporary theatre at its best.

And hey, the actors are pretty damn fine, too. Keep an eye on those costumes.

Book your tickets here.

Welcome to Happenstance magazine’s spanking new website!

Happenstance is a Sydney-based arts, design, lifestyle and culture quarterly committed to contributing to a culture of continual improvement in the local creative community. Our website will be a reflection of our commitment by complementing the magazine with more timely content and updates. Subscribe to our RSS feed here to stay tuned in, or contact us here to submit material or feedback.

Happenstance launched on Friday April 24, at Chippendale’s Serial Space. With performances by Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, Dead Farmers and DJ Libre, the crowd quickly hit capacity. Early birds snatched up the 150 limited edition hand-screened logo print tote bags stuffed with goodies, and everyone got their hands on the inaugural issue of Happenstance magazine. If you missed out on the launch, grab a copy of Issue #1 here.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support us and made the night an extremely memorable one! We are now busy behind the scenes, looking forward to dropping a bigger, badder Issue #2 in July. Word is bond.
